The new job

About a month ago, I started working as an Assistant Public Defender. This is the most challenging work I have ever done. Never has so much been on the line. Never has the quality of my work had such impact on the lives of those I serve. The good part is that my awareness of my inadequacy prompts me to rely on God in every aspect of my performance. It is a great privilege.

I agree that it is a great responsibility and a great way to serve. It is also quite hilarious. I recently had the opportunity to serve a juvenile client. This little guy looked me right in the eye, and looked his guardian grandmother right in the eye, and assured us yes, absolutely, he could pass a drug test. Sure enough, just as I predicted, the judge orders a drug test. My little guy goes back there and he and the bailiff are gone a LONG time. Bailiff comes out and is smirking. Judge asks where the results are, and the bailiff says that it is rather hard to drug test tap water. My little guy had tried to pass off tap water as his urine---needless to say, we got a sample eventually (after he was forced to drink about a gallon of water), and sure enough he was positive for cocaine. Sad and funny situation. It is definitely a privilege, and DEFINITELY a job where you have to rely on God and his divine leadership.

Wow, that's an important job. And challenging. "I can do all things . . . " comes to mind.
